Vintage photo album documenting a private six-day tour of Belgium and France in April 1928, focused almost entirely on views of World War I battle sites, ruins, monuments and memorials. The trip began in Dover, England, on board the "Princess Marie-Rose," landing in Ostend on the sea coast of Belgium. 70 photos follow, all neatly arranged, two per page every other page, all described in white lettering. There are views of Ypres, including the Menin Gate, Grand Place, war fortifications, ruins of Cloth Hall, the arrival of the Lord Mayor of London at the Town Hall, and the memorial to the Queen Victoria Rifles, as well as visits to the French towns of Neuve Chapelle and the memorial to the Indians; Bethune; Hulluch and the Hohenzollern Redoubt; Vimy and the Canadian trenches; Arras and the chapel and barracks, street scenes, and ruins of the cathedral; Oppy and its thatched roof houses, with superb topographical photos of the woods; Serre and the British cemetery; Albert and ruined houses, waterfall, reconstruction of the cathedral; Longueval and the South African memorial; Thiepval and Puyzieres, and including views of the towns and landscapes throughout. What further distinguishes the album is the quality of the images - well composed, evocative, well toned. The album measures 8.75" by 6", and most photos are roughly 3.25" by 2.5" in size. Written name in front attributes the album to someone named Y.E. Godfrey. I've sold dozens of photo albums over the years as a vendor who specializes in vintage photography - this is among the finest albums I've offered. Interior is clean, fresh, and unsullied. Album boards with some splitting along the spine; binding remains firm.
