The United States Morgan Dollar Series is one of the most highly sought after series for coin collectors and numismatists around the world.

The dollar was authorized by the Bland–Allison Act in 1873. It was minted from 1878 to 1904, and again in 1921.

Following the passage of the Bland–Allison Act, mining interests lobbied to restore free silver, which would require the Mint to strike all silver presented to it as coins. The miners failed at their lobbying attempt and the Bland-Allison Act, requiring the Treasury to purchase only between two and four million dollars' worth of silver at market value to be coined into dollars each month, held until 1890.
