Large Antique American Pewter Plate, Thomas Danforth II, Middletown, CT, c. 1777 to 1782. This large 12" plate is a very fine example manufactured by one of the finest American pewter families. This is a plate with a single reeded rim with a shallow. There are some well struck impressed maker's marks on the back of the plate with two rampant lion in gateway marks, side by side. The marks have minimal wear so you can easily read the "THOMAS" above; and the, "DANFORTH" below both marks. There are also a full set of well struck hallmarks! These are the marks of Thomas Danforth II, who worked out of Middletown, Connecticut from 1755 to 1782. This has an excellent provenance as it was purchased by Bette and Melvyn Wolf back around 2008 from the "R.S.M. Collection - No. 1198".
