ALPS

LT COL JOHN ARTHUR ARMSTRONG

(C1840-C1920)

MONTE CRYSTALLO RANGE FROM SCHLUNDERBACH, THE ALPS 1897

This fascinating small series is the remainder from a large collection of Lt.Col Armstrong's works which we purchased years ago and most of which were sold.   However, during a clear out we discovered 7 of the better ones which we had retained and which we are now offering.

Armstrong was a professional Indian Army Engineer who joined it in 1860 and retired in 1882 as a Lt Col.    During this time he travelled widely throughout India recording in a very good amateur artist's hand interesting places he had visited.   On retirement to Holgate House, Hemsworth, Yorkshire he both continued to travel and to paint.    The series also contains views in the Alps and in Yorkshire in the 1890s.

All are initialled in ink and are in very good condition, with fresh colours because they were kept in large albums away from the light.

A MOST INTERESTING SMALL SERIES.

They are unmounted and are all in fine condition

This item is an impressive view of the Monte Chrystallo range, The Alps, from Schlunderbach in 1897.

Size 11" x 13" (27cm x 32cm)
