 ELIZABETH DENNISTOUN

SCOTTISH SCHOOL SCOTTISH LOCHS

1876

This most attractive series of 39 watercolours was painted by Elizabeth Dennistoun, a talented artist, possibly the Mrs "R" Dennistoun listed as living in Helensburgh, Scotland who exhibited at the Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts in 1884.

They depict many of the Scottish Lochs/lakes and were stuck in an album.   All were clearly identified by the artist.

Some filled both sides of single pages and had to be removed and remounted together with their ink descriptions.   The remaining 24 could be kept on their original leaves.

The loose ones were remounted on white acid free paper and then on acid free board.    The others were remounted on their original leaves within acid free board.

The quality through is fine.    There is some age toning and on a few some pigments have oxidised.   Most colours are very vivid.   All were painted within moulded paper frames, the edges of some of which are slightly toned.

None were signed, though Elizabeth Dennistoun has signed and dated (1876) the inside of the album cover where she had written a crib of the contents.

A most interesting record of Scottish landscapes as they were nearly 140 years ago.

This drawing is of Loch Awe and Kilchurn Castle.    It is mounted within acid free board.
