All About Marklin HO Model Track

Marklin has made at least 3 different types on HO train track with a metal roadbed: 1))   3-Rail (aka 3600 series),  2))   Model Track (aka 3800-3900 series), and 3))  the very common “M” Track (aka “stud”.)  These tracks have been made in various radii (size of concentric circles.)  3-Rail track and “M” Track curve pieces have very common radii of 360 mm and 437 mm. But the “Model Track” has the much LARGER radii of 536 mm and 586 mm.  See table below:

·5100 Standard curve =  360 mm or 14.17 inch radius

·5200 Big radius curve = 437 mm or 17.22 inch radius

·3800  “Model” curve =    536 mm or 21.10 inch radius

·3900 “Model” curve =     586 mm or 23.07 inch radius

Very cool things about Marklin Model Track:

·Has much LARGER radii for more realistic layouts (it takes 16 pieces of curve track to make a full circle)

·Has plastic inserts between the metal roadbed and the train rails for reduced running noise

·The “sleepers” are black plastic and look more realistic than the sleepers of other Marklin metal track

·Model track has a studded center rail very similar to the common “M” track

·The 2 outer rails are electrically connected with 2 jumpers on each piece of track; these jumpers can be cut which make all 3 rails electrically isolated from each other, allowing 2 rail DC train operations

·Model track and "M" track can be connected to each other without any special transition pieces

·Model track sold for a few years (around 1953 thru 1956); it did not sell well and was discontinued.  It is hard to find; commands a premium price

·Model Track has a slightly more yellowish color roadbed compared to “M” track

·The years that Model track was available were also the years that Marklin switched over from their old numbering system to a new “4-digit” numbering system.  However, just as the new numbers were introduced (i.e., the 5040, 5050, 5056) the Model track was discontinued and few folks know the track by these newer numbers.  For Model track, here are the corresponding numbers:

Timothy Eckert started playing with Marklin HO when he was 5 years old; his father's job with RCA sent him to Germany on a regular basis and he always came home with Marklin trains in his suitcase!   One set of used Marklin passenger cars that his parents bought at a garage sale was a set of 351 cars, but the very rare version with the prohibited swastika on the sides.   After 20 years of play, it was finally realized how collectible these were, and they were traded for a large lot of K track and signals and cash.   Receiving the Marklin SIGNALS ended up being MUCH MORE IMPORTANT than the cash, as this opened up a whole new world of signals and automatic train control (ATC) for Tim. He has spent much time since then building signal controllers, and playing with the finer points of ATC! Eckert Engineering was created with Marklin, Signals, and Digital Power Supplies at the forefront. (Tim's day job as a Engineer in the nuclear commercial power industry helped give him the electrical engineering know-how necessary.) But Tim Eckert has decided that it is time to start a slow turnover of Eckert Engineering to his youngest son, Andrew.   Andrew has graduated High School and has enrolled in a local college; he has shown an interest in the Marklin Trains and in the business. So, each day we have the Apprentice learning from the Master yet another aspect of the wonderful world of Marklin Trains!!
