the Old
Man
of the Mountain
Great Stone Face “Live Free or Die”
The Old Man of the Mountain art print is from
an original watercolor painting on a NH road map by the Artist, William B.
MacGregor Jr.
Artist Note: The White
Mountains are not the same now that the Old Man of the Mountain
is gone. I miss him!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Old Man of the Mountain, also known as the Great Stone Face or the
Profile was a series of five granite cliff ledges on Cannon Mountain in
the White Mountains of New Hampshire that when viewed from the north,
appeared to be the jagged profile of a face. The site is located in the town
of Franconia.
The first recorded mention of the Old Man was in 1805. It sadly collapsed on
May 3, 2003. A non-profit group is building a memorial at ground level near
the site.

Artist Statement
My painting
technique incorporates “old skool” mechanical and civil drafting techniques
including ruling pens, Leroy, inking the drawing and then completing it using watercolors,
acrylics and gouache. Originals and
prints of my watercolors are now part of private collections throughout the United States,
and foreign countries.
