This listing is for one LYSO Crystal ready to use as a gamma calibration check source for Gamma Spectrometry. LYSO contains Lutetium that is slightly radioactive and has very specific gamma energy emitted at 201.8 keV and 306.8 keV. Since the energies emitted are in a common area of interest, Lu176 makes an excellent calibration source for gamma spectrometry. With a half-life of more than 37 billion years, it's a check source that won't wear out on you, or that you will constantly have to recalibrate for.

These are not recommended for use as a Geiger Mueller (GM) check source or for use with plastic scintillators, as the emitted energy is too week to provide many counts (unless using perhaps a dozen or more pieces). A good quality NaI(Tl) detector (or better) is recommended for spectrum analysis. You will not be able to determine a spectrum with a Plastic Scintillator or a poor condition sodium iodide detector.

The crystals may come with some slight adhesive residue that can easily be removed with a new straight edge razor blade.

LYSO is also a Premium Scintillator Material, with very good energy resolution and guaranteed to work for gamma radiation detection when coupled to a PMT and built into a probe. LYSO is denser than BGO or GSO with a specific density of 7.16 g/cm^3 that provides excellent stopping power for high energy photons. Much greater density than that of NaI(Tl) and is non-hygroscopic and safe to handle. LYSO is very durable and does not break easily.  When measuring low energy samples, the Lu176 background can be subtracted, but is not always necessary since the emitted energy is week and very specific.

This listing is only for 1 LYSO crystal, no other items shown are included in the sale. The laptop computer, detector and other equipment is NOT INCLUDED!

Dimensions each crystal:

From the manufacture:

LYSO crystal is an ideal generation scintillator crystal. LYSO (Cerium-doped Lutetium Yttrium Orthosilicate). LYSO crystal has the advantages of high light output and density, quick decay time, excellent energy resolution and low cost. These properties make LYSO an ideal candidate for a range of ray detection applications in nuclear physics and nuclear medicine, which require higher, improved timing resolution and superior energy resolution.
