About Priest Cruz:

Father Cruz was born on 29 July 1859. His secondary education took effect in Lisbon, between the years 1868 and 1875 and, later that year, he departed to the University of Coimbra, where he remained for five years.

His ordination took place in 1882, having become director of the College of orphans. He was also spiritual director at St. Vincent de Fora and, in the late 1940s, was admitted to the Society of Jesus. He traveled the archipelagos of Madeira and the Azores in 1942, and finally died in Lisbon on 1 October 1948.

His beatification process took place between '50 and '60, have been delivered all documentation to Santa Fe almost at the end of 1965. The approval of the writings took place in 1971, although it was not canonized.

His life took place at a stage where, after the establishment of the Republic, hunger and misery increased gradually. They hung in the air the will to exterminate the Christian doctrines and ruled the persecution of the clergy. Religion was accused of "putting the people to sleep" and preventing their political awareness.

While most of the priests denied their faith, Father Cruz bravely faced the enemies of the Church. Even when the ban on the use of priestly garb, when church and state were legally separated, Father Cruz continued to wear his clothes.

Among the miracles attributed to him it is said that he had the gift of making "up the sun". This is because, with their prayers, will away a storm near Goleg. It is also said that his amazing intuition allowed him to "detect" survivors amid dead bodies after the fierce fighting that took place in the early twentieth century. In addition, he went through the poorest areas, helping with donations and giving words of comfort to the poorest and neediest.

His language was simple, direct and reached the hearts of those who heard him, working miracles. In the face of any adversity, he prayed. He ran nationwide, tireless in their struggle for the defense of faith. And everywhere was heard, respected and regarded as "a man sent by God to save the country from the hands of atheists."

Despite his firm stance, Father Cruz never showed a rebellious attitude, let alone urged the faithful to take positions of strength or violence. On the contrary, he advised his listeners to think and read, so that they could understand their mission in this world.

While he went through the land, resorting to the most unprotected, Father wrote prayers and thus tried to encourage the illiterate to start their reading.

With simple words, melodic and harmony-filled, Father Cruz was your requests to God, to Christ, the Virgin Mary, the angels and the saints. With short and easy to recite prayers, teaching the poor (but heart-rich) the greatest of all the arts: Praying.
