It is beautifully crafted from beech wood and originates from Jiangsu Province in China, which was renowned for cabinets with ornate carved decoration made during the Qing dynasty. Chinese cabinets were functional objects as well as works of art and came in various shapes, sizes, forms, and designs to hold a variety of objects. This fine cabinet is square-cornered with four doors, and features intricately carved auspicious imagery. It is a showcase example of Chinese furniture distinguished by the beauty of the material and the simplicity of form reduced to flowing smooth lines and simple, extremely well constructed joinery. The measurements are 35.5 inches in length by 17.5 inches deep by 65.75 inches in height (90.1 cm by 44.4 cm by 167.0). It is in very good used condition, with wear consistent to a dating to the late-18th century. Importantly, it is an intact, original piece. It has a fine provenance coming from an important U.S. Midwest collection. This is a rare and beautiful piece, excellent for today’s décor, and a unique opportunity for a collector of fine antique furniture to adorn either an office or home, while savoring the culture, traditions and lifestyle of Chinese civilization.
