5 REFERENCE BOOKS ON REMBRANDT WITH OTTO BENESCH'S SELECTED DRAWINGS

REMBRANDT VAN RIJN
Born July 15, 1606 in Leyden, Holland.
"Rembrandt's father was a miller, his mother
the daughter of a baker. In other words, the
artist sprang from the lower middle class, like
the majority of Dutch painters....In the democratic
Holland of the early seventeenth century the lower
middle class was by no means looked down upon.
On the contrary, Dutch culture in its prime drew its
main force from the ranks of the small burghers....
the decision of Rembrandt's parents to prepare
their gifted son for a scholarly career does not
indicate any extravagant ambition on their part."

This quotation is from the two volume set by
Jakob Rosenberg. The first volume being the
biographical information and the second volume
having the black and white reproductions of
 Rembrandt's paintings and drawings....281
in total. The books were published in 1948 by
Harvard University Press. It includes a bibliography
and a concordance of paintings at the end of
volume one. Both books are in good condition
with aging of the endpapers, and the edges, not
affecting the art images.

The largest book is by Otto Benesch, titled:
REMBRANDT SELECTED DRAWINGS
This is a plate book published by Phaidon in
1947 and precedes his monumental six volume
catalogue raisonne of Rembrandt's drawings,
which was published in the following decade.
This book is a taste of that later work, having
examples from every working period of the
artist's life. The images are large and very well
printed, however the page edges are rippled
with water damage occurring some time in the
distant past, and this is reflected on the book's
cover. Still worth having as a reasonably
priced Rembrandt reference, as are the other
volumes here offered in one lot.

Choix de Cinquante Dessins de
Rembrandt Van Rijn. From the Braun & Cie
series published in 1929: Dessins et Peintures
des Maitres Anciens. This book, which in in very
good condition and has the Librairie H. Le Soudier
sticker on the inside front cover, has 50 full page
images of Rembrandt drawings. It includes one each
of the elephant, lion, and Ganymede drawings.
The short text and location information is in
FRENCH LANGUAGE ONLY.

The last book is the significant biography by
Joannis van Loon, edited by Hendrik Willem van Loon.
Published in 1936 by H. Liveright. The book is a
massive 570 pages with illustrations, in good
condition with only a few spots of wear on the
spine. The elaborate map endpapers are
probably by Hendrick Van Loon, who illustrated many
books (and won the first Newbery Medal in 1922),
it has a great bookplate on the inside front cover
of a William S. Holman. This could not be the famous
Congressman from Indiana, as that gentleman
died in 1897, however, his one son was named
William S. Holman Jr. and the quote on this
bookplate, which is from Frances Bacon, would
certainly have met with the Congressman's approval.
