Perennial. Easy
to grow prairie grass that likes water and sun, but tolerates everything from shade to near drought, and looks like upright crabgrass until it flowers and seeds. Dies down in winter to re-sprout in Spring. Usually flowers in its second year. Nice quality seeds, clean packs. Grows all over the USA naturally (especially well-suited for the corn belt), tolerates heat, drought, floods, shade and full sun. Very versatile plant. Looks much like lawn grass or common weeds, but taller. A simple spiked reed with broad wonderful seed clusters that distinguish this species from its look-alikes.
Phalaris Arundinacaea is a legal, perennial grass that reaches five to six feet
in height and grows prolifically, especially around wetlands, open prairie-land and ditches. It is commonly referred to as "reed canary grass" because it is
grown as a pet bird seed favored by canaries. Phalaris is also used to feed cattle, is planted
as a form of soil erosion control, and is even grown as an ornamental grass in some landscaping. It can
be easily grown in clumps to provide inexpensive decoration for rock gardens and beds.
Once established, it requires no maintenance and can reproduce by seeds
or creeping rhizomes (not creepy, just spreading). Mature seeds can be harvested once
the tops have dried on the plant. Seeds with straw are used in some flower arrangements, as are wheat straw.
Thrives in wet or dry environments, in marshes or in dry prairies, partial or full sun.

Growing Information
Sow seeds on the surface of any raked soil and make sure to keep well-watered until established. The seeds may be sown directly in the ground or they can be started in pots so that the maturing clumps can be transplanted. Plant seeds or grass in full sun for best growth. This grass can tolerate shade, if necessary. Likes water. Tolerates constant wet feet. Also tolerates drought.
