The Game of Shogi

Shogi translates to "the generals' game." It is the chess form native to Japan, virtually unchanged for the past 500 years. It seems to be derived primarily from the Chinese chess, xiangqi, but also bears interesting similarities to Thai chess, makruk, and has bishop and rook moves like European "international" chess.
But the distinctively Japanese shogi has novel rules unknown to other forms of chess. Most markedly, when a shogi piece is captured, it remains in play, waiting on the sideline until the captor chooses to place it back on the board, as one of his own pieces. Also, unique to shogi is that almost all of the pieces promote to a pieces of greater power when they reach to opponent's side of the board. The tile-like pieces flip over to show their new values.
The game takes on fascinating complexities and surprises not found in any other board game. It is still played avidly in Japan and recently has been gaining popularity in other parts of the world.

PROFESSIONAL QUALITY PIECES

These pieces are precision crafted of Japanese white camellia wood. They are inscribed with the utmost of clarity, suitable for tournament play.
Note that the reverse side of the pieces, showing the promotional value, maintains the same black ink as the rest of the set.
The largest piece, the king,
measures 3 cm (1 and 3/16 inches) long.

TRADITIONAL WOODEN BOX

This set comes in a traditional wooden box, approx. 4½ x 3½ x 1½ inches.
These boxes are often used as stands for the captured pieces, each player putting one part of the box (top or bottom) with a flat surface up, on the player's right-hand side. of the board.

A simple paper mat is included, which fits the pieces very tightly. You will probably want to play with this set on a quality wooden or bamboo board.

BOARD NOT INCLUDED

Please note that no board is included with these shogi pieces. You will probably want to get a good board, to match the quality of these pieces.

English Rules

Included with this set are the official rules of shogi, in English. They are clearly and concisely given, with diagrams and explanations in a convenient four panel booklet.
