Gorter was a Dutch painter known for oil paintings of vast  landscapes.  He was a contemporary to the Dutch Hague School  but worked more in the French Barbizon style.  He studied at the National Academy in Amsterdam, and found success in not  only the Netherlands, but Germany and France as well. Gorter participated in annual Salons in Paris, and in 1914, exhibited at the Royal Academy of Britain and the Royal  Scottish Academy.  He was an elected member of the Institut  de France. His paintings are in the collection of the Musee d’ Orsay, and his plein air studies have become very sought  after around the globe.
