Fibula are decorative, symbolic, and functional. The size and weight of the fibula worn by this Berber woman indicate her status whilst their shape, the inverted triangle, represent the female form. they also serve as clasps to keep her mantle in place. Craftsmen in the Anti-Atlas Mountains specialize in this unusual form of decoration with many fine holes - a time-consuming technique which is fast dying out.
