* This kit will  include (1) 6.5mm round brilliant Cubic Zirconia AAA grade VVS D color 1 carat Diamond equivalent simulant specimen stone. You can use this to study facet rounding with your 10x loupe magnifier included in this kit. This specimen is good to use in distinguishing the poor thermal conductivity properties of Cubic Zirconia (FOG TEST). Use this specimen stone as a gauge for the RS MIZAR Diamond Tech Pro Model Prestige Series II Diamond Tester provided in this kit! Test the loose stone in the aluminum testing tray provided in this kit. Specimen Cubic Zirconia stone should show one or two bar movements, depending solely of ambient temperatures. At room temperature Cubic Zirconia may not move up LED lamp or may only move up 1 lamp. It is very important on distinguishing Cubic Zirconia from other semi-precious stones to hold ring in question in hand for about 5-10 seconds to allow the stone to warm up for the most accurate testing in separating semi-precious simulants.


Understand the density of certain gemstones to accurately calculate the estimated total carat weight of your jewelry! Use the PuriTEST Specific Gravity sheet provided in this kit to accurately calculate gemstone estimated weight! Your Cubic Zirconia specimen test stone will gauge as 6.5mm according to the Gemstone estimated Diamond gauge and will show as 1 carat. Remember this gauge only references the known density of (Diamond 3.52 Specific Gravity)! Cubic Zirconia is roughly 1.6-1.8 times as dense as Diamond. Cubic Zirconia has a density from 5.6-6.15 Specific Gravity, depending solely on the stabilizers that are used in the proprietary formulation of CZ! Example 6.5mm round Cubic Zirconia specimen stone should weigh approximately 1.7-1.8 carats.


 

Also you can understand the Visual Optic spectrum that Cubic Zirconia displays. Cubic Zirconia displays slightly different visual spectrums and has more dispersion and scintillation than Diamond! I will also include a random fortune cookie fortune along with this kit so you can better understand the Refractive Index of Cubic Zirconia.  This method costs nothing, and only uses your eyes and a light source. Light source could be a pen light, an old incandescent light bulb, or even the moon light shining in through your window.

How to test: If testing in set jewelry make sure to place stone as close to your eyeball without touching your eyeball! If you wear contacts, then you are ahead of the game! Place stone close to eye and peer through stone to light source.


Using Visual Optics on Diamonds you will see what appears as a night sky of small sharp stars scattered through out. I.D. of Diamond.


Using Visual Optics on Silicon Carbide "Moissanite" you will see what appears as a blizzard of wonderful colored snowflakes. I.D. of Silicon Carbide "Moissanite".

Cubic Zirconia also is a poor thermal conductor, the Diamond Tester provided will show you this, one or two LED lamp bar movements may occur while testing Cubic Zirconia. If you breathe on your test Cubic Zirconia specimen it will fog for more than three seconds. If performing this test please make sure the stone is free from all oils, dirt and grime. When turning unit on please allow 7-9 seconds for the unit to heat up before beginning any testing. The RED LED Wait/Battery light will remain on for 5-7 seconds, and then RED LED Wait/Battery light will extinguish and beep for 1 second. Once RED LED extinguishes the Tester is ready  to begin further testing. This unit comes pre-set from the factory in AUTO MODE, LAMP 3 should emit after Tester probe tip is heated. User can adjust settings with MANUAL MODE for higher or lower sensitivity. Once adjusted you are now ready to begin further testing on stones.


* Performing tests with the RS Mizar Diamond Tech Pro Model Prestige Series II Diamond Tester 

When turning unit on please allow 7-9 seconds for the Wait Lamp/Ready light to extinguish to begin further testing. Depending on testing temperature this may take up to 10-20 seconds if you are in temperatures colder than 60-65 degrees. Optimal testing temperatures are between 70-72 degrees. Tester usually takes 6-8 seconds to heat up in temperatures ranging between 70-80 degrees.

It is best to test in environments from 70-88 degrees. Results are best at room temperature. This temperature range will be more accurate on testing simulant stones, distinguishing from semi-precious, and colorless diamond simulants such as; glass, cubic zirconia, topaz, sapphire, and zircon.

*Helpful hints from what I have experienced on handling hundreds of these particular testers, RS Mizar Diamond Tech Pro Prestige Series II Diamond Tester

On larger stones above 0.50 carats or (5mm), set the intensity volume LED meter at 1 or 2 when testing  at room temperature. Smaller melee stones above 0.06 carats or (2.5mm), you can set between a 2-3 if you are testing at room temperature only. I have found that on stones 2.5mm and above, to always leave the meter set at 2 if testing at room temperature only. On stones below 0.06 carats, or under (2.5 mm), set the intensity volume LED meter at 3, if testing at room temperature only. The probe tip of this RS Mizar Diamond Tech Pro Prestige Series II diamond tester is 0.75mm-0.80mm, so you can test diamonds from 0.005 carat (1/2 point 1mm), to 0.01 carat (1 point 1.35mm), with some practice, and steady hands! I myself test diamonds under 1.35mm (0.01 carat) all the time with these testers with ease and accuracy!

 


It is best to test in environments from 70-88 degrees. Ideal testing results are best at room temperature or between 70-75 degrees!

Colorless Gemstones that will show lamp movements of the LED bars of the volume intensity meter.

Faceted Glass NO movement to ONE bar movement.

Cubic Zirconia ONE to TWO bar movements.

 White Topaz usually moving up a three or four bars up to the lowest yellow LED lamp.

Colorless Zircon usually  moving up three or more LED movements similar to white topaz.

White Sapphire usually moving up to the highest Yellow LED lamps #7-#8 volume intensity lamp bars. May also move very slowly indicating diamond in the Lower RED LED Lamps if stone is very large. If testing LARGE stones adjust LED Lamps to #1-#2 to avoid this.

Synthetic Moissanite will go all the way to the red bars indicating Diamond. Please see my above Ebay photos of separating Moissanite with a loupe. Moissanite shows double refraction! You must tilt stone in question, examining stone with 10X triplet loupe provided. You must then look through the kite shaped facet into through the pavilion, focusing on the culet. It will display double pavilion facets, and will be quite blurry! Please reference above Ebay photos to better understand testing methods of moissanite.

Diamond will instantly go up to the high RED LED lamps. When testing VERY SMALL sized stones from 0.90-1.20 millimeters set intensity meter at LAMP #4 or #5.  When testing SMALL sized stones from 1.30-1.80 millimeters set intensity meter at LAMP #4. When testing MEDIUM sized stones from 1.90-3.00 millimeters set intensity meter at LAMP #3 or #4. When testing LARGE stones from 3.10-4.00 millimeters set intensity meter at LAMP #2 or #3. When testing VERY LARGE stones above 4.10 millimeters set intensity meter at Lamp #1-#2.



Using the above various methods of testing provided in this in depth Ebay description will give you accurate non destructive means of identification. *Doubling View of Moissanite Caused by Refraction of Light

The best way to observe this effect is to view the gemstone at an angle from the crown (bezel) facet. By bringing a 10X loupe and focusing on the culet through the bezel facet, you can check the gemstone for a “doubling” facets effect.



 I include a 6.5 millimeter round brilliant Cubic Zirconia stone with all the thermal conductivity diamond testers that I sell. I also include a fortune cookie with fine print with a small black dot to better explain Refractive index of various gemstones. This tester gives definitive results from distinguishing Glass, paste, plastics, Cubic Zirconia, GGG, YAG, Rutile, Strontium Titanate. All of these mentioned simulants have very poor or low thermal conductive properties. This particular tester (RS MIZAR Diamond Tech Pro Prestige Series II) performs optimally in temperatures ranging from 68-80 degrees Fahrenheit or 20-27 degrees Celsius.


*The large Cubic zirconia specimen stone provided with this kit has a density of 5.80-6.00 g/cm3 this is much greater than natural diamond 3.52 g/cm3.


It is important to always allow rings, or loose stones being tested to reach room temperature for the best optimal test results. Example: Attending a yard sale in cold temperatures and testing a cold stone may indicate false readings for corundum material. The synthetic corundum stone (Lab-created Rubies, or Sapphires) may indicate diamond when first tested. The stone must NOT be cold. If a porthole is in the setting you can place table of the stone on fine print provided (Fortune Cookie), and determine diamond from corundum simulant. Please examine ebay photos of this listing to see the various simulants and diamond on the fine print. Sapphire has a very low R.I. letters will be very clear.


If letters are vaguely recognized then you have a gemstone with higher Refractive index readings. If letters are clearly recognized you have a simulant with low refractive index reading, Glass, paste, GGG, YAG,sapphire. Sapphire and rubies both synthetic and natural have medium thermal conductive properties, and are easily separated with the (RS MIZAR Diamond Tech Pro Prestige Series II ). The volume intensity meter will rise just below the RED  LED lamps into the Orange/Yellow LED lamps. This is why it is important to test stones accordingly to the carat size of stone. Stones larger than 5.00 millimeter stones should almost always be tested with (1) LED bar showing, this is to eliminate false readings. Smaller stones below 4.00 millimeters can be tested between a 2-3 on the LED bars volume intensity meter. Please reference my tips to have the best optimal test results on various other diamond simulants.


User tips: When testing colored stones Red, Blue, Orange, Green, Yellow stones. Diamonds in this color range are considered extremely rare in large sizes. Red Diamonds command hundreds of thousands to millions per carat. The same applies to fancy pinks, and greens and blues. If the tester indicates diamond on the Prestige Series II Tester, it is most likely corundum material R.I. basic test will confirm your suspicions. Sterling silver or low karatage 9k-10k gold will almost never contain high-end fancy colored diamonds of medium to large sizes 3.50mm-5.00mm, but may contain melee sized fancy colored diamonds of 1mm-2.5mm .


Smaller melee cubic zirconia should rise (1) LED bar on the intensity volume meter if tested in temperatures 68-80 degrees (20-27 degrees Celsius).


Larger cubic zirconia stones should rise between 1-2 LED bars on the intensity volume meter if tested in temperatures 68-80 degrees (20-27 degrees Celsius).


Faceted Glass should stay the same or rise only (1) LED bar on the intensity volume meter.

This takes some time to master but once you master this technique it takes literally seconds to make the determination. Moissanite testers are good to have but shouldn't be relied upon. Congratulations on your purchase of the Prestige Series II, the world’s finest diamond tester. With this unique Instrument you will obtain the most information about the stones you are testing. You also will have the versatility of selecting between the “auto” mode with valuable sensitivity or the “manual” mode which allows for adjustments for extremes in temperature or stone size.

OPERATIONAL CHECKOUT


1. Rotate the Thumbwheel (3) in a counter-clockwise direction beyond the “click”.


2. Press the “ON” button (8).


3. The Wait Lamp (4) will be lit.


4. All other display lamps will remain extinguished for the wait period, which is typically less than nine seconds at room temperature. The time can increase with low temperatures or a weak battery. After the wait period there is a single beep.


5. If the waiting time exceeds twenty seconds or the Wait


Lamp fails to extinguish replace the battery.


6. The Diamond Tester is ready to use after the Wait


Lamp extinguishes and a display lamp (#1 to #8) is lit.


In the “Auto” mode display lamp 3 is normally lit after the unit has warmed up, typically ten to twenty seconds.


7. If the ambient temperature is not within the range of the automatic circuitry (70-88 F, 21-31 C) the diamond tester is still able to test a stone by testing with the


Manual Range Adjust (3).


8. When testing is completed press the “OFF” button.


Always turn off the unit after testing to increase battery life.


“AUTO-SET”


This adjustment affects the sensitivity of the “automatic range” only. It is pre-set at the factory to lamp #3. If you prefer a higher sensitivity for diamonds you may adjust the “auto-set” (through the bottom of the front label) to lamp #4. To make this adjustment, turn the thumbwheel (3) fully counter-clockwise until clicked. Turn the unit on and wait twenty seconds to allow the probe to reach maximum temperature. Then with a jeweler’s screwdriver adjust the “Auto-Set” to “the center of” lamp #4. If you prefer a lower sensitivity follow the above procedure and adjust to “the center of” lamp #2. This adjustment will not affect the Manual mode.


AUTOMATIC SHUT-OFF


The Diamond Tester will automatically shut off after 90 seconds of inactivity. Whenever the “On” button is pressed the timer resets to 90 seconds. If the unit is shut off before you have completed your test simply press the on button and continue your testing as soon as the display comes on. Always press the “OFF” button after testing to prolong battery life.

PREPARATION PRIOR TO TESTING A STONE


· The presence of dust, dirt, film and moisture on a stone may produce an inaccurate indication. Therefore, it is prudent to routinely clean the surface of each stone to be tested by using a damp soft clean fabric followed by drying using a dry soft clean fabric.


· Remove the protective cover from the probe.


· The tip of the probe should be cleaned frequently by wiping the tip across the surface of a piece of bonded paper or a business card. Copier paper and fax paper are to be avoided.


· The tip of the probe may be damaged by accidental drop. Always place the protective cover over the probe immediately after use. Probe tip damage is exempted from the warranty.


· During testing the users hands should be clean and dry. Do not wear gloves.


· The stone to be tested should be allowed to reach room temperature.


· For maximum accuracy, minimize handling of the stone prior to testing. If the item to be tested consists of a setting containing many stones requiring more than ten seconds to test user must avoid heating the setting with his hand; allow the item to be untouched for about fifteen seconds.


· Loose stones may be placed on the testing platform (9) at any time and be tested immediately.


· Best results are obtained by performing tests in still air. Avoid fans, drafts or air movement from air conditioning or heating sources. Avoid breathing directly on the probe tip while testing.


“AUTO” TESTING


“Auto”-Testing can be performed when the temperature is within 70-88 F and the stone size is between .08 and .75 Karats.


For all other conditions use the manual mode and adjust to the calibration chart (p.3). The automatic testing mode


(“Auto”-Testing) is achieved by rotating the thumbwheel counter-clockwise until a “click” is felt.


1. Perform the operational checkout as described above.

3. The ambient temperature should be between 70°F and 88°F for “Auto” Testing. Normally Lamp #3 will be lit.


4. Hold the diamond tester in your hand so that your fingers are in contact with the conductive panel (6).


5. With the other hand pick up the stone to be tested by its setting or place a loose stone in the appropriate well in the testing platform held with that hand.


6. Guide the probe tip to the center of a facet on the stone.


7. Touch the probe tip to the stone so that the probe tip is firmly and squarely against the facet of the stone. Excessive force which might bend or break the tip must be avoided.


8. Make sure the probe is perpendicular to facet of stone while testing.


9. After each test the display should return to the original lamp.

MANUAL TESTING RANGE


Manual testing can be used under all conditions (temperatures and stone size).


Before testing a stone set the Range Indicator (2) to the correct calibration position with the Range Adj. (3). The correct position is selected from the calibration chart below. Selection of the calibration is based on the stone size and surrounding temperature.


 



Under 0.06ct., set the Range Indicator Lamp to light on up to 6.


From 0.06ct. to 0.5ct, set the Range Indicator Lamp to light up to 4.


Over 0.5ct. set the Range Indicator Lamp to light on up to 2.


For example, when testing a stone of about 0.3 carat in colder temperatures, set the Range Indicator Lamp to light on 3 and in warmer temperatures set it to light on 5.


HELPFUL HINTS


· If the red Low Battery lamp remains on after twenty seconds replace battery.


· Stones being worn, which may be well above room temperature can be tested immediately using the manual mode. Simply set the range set point one lamp number greater than what the calibration chart indicates or allow the stone to return to room temperature before testing.


· When testing a small stone avoid incidental heating of the stone by the probe; make good contact against the stone on the first test attempt, otherwise allow the stone to return to room temperature before retesting.


· Observation of display activity allows user to determine a number of things: a) Diamonds cause rapid “movement up the display” and large diamonds “move all the way to lamp eleven quickly. b) Cubic Zirconias hardly “move up the display” at all. c) Other semi-precious gems consistently “move up the display” various “distances” based on their size. d) The only stone that comes close to reading as a diamond is the large sapphire or ruby (corundum). It “moves up the range” very slowly compared to diamond and the slow movement is a further indication of sapphire. Also the kind of color usually allows easy rejection of colored sapphires. Large white sapphires can approach the diamond range but these stones can easily be rejected because they do not “sparkle” as diamonds do under normal incandescent lighting.

INTERPRETING THE INDICATION


METAL ALERT The sounding of a continuous audible tone indicates that the probe tip is in contact with either the users hand, the setting, or the testing platform. The “Tone” is also accompanied by the display being momentarily turned off. The remedy is to reposition the probe tip as described under “Auto” Test section.


DIAMOND SIMULANTS When testing Cubic Zirconiums, “Paste”, Strass and other diamond

 simulants no illumination of the green diamond lamp will be observed.

However, some diamond simulants may light one yellow lamp beyond the initial set point.


DIAMONDS Testing of a genuine diamond will cause the green diamond lamp to flash (along with the red error light) and a discontinuous beeping (beep beep- beep) will sound.


 


MAINTENANCE


· Always place the protective cover over the probe immediately after use. Probe tip damage is not covered in the warranty.


· The only maintenance required is: (1.) cleaning the probe tip and (2) battery replacement.
