Here's a very rare Victorian Centennial Novelty Covered Butter.  The pattern is known as Banner.  It is 7 1/2" L by 6" W.  With the cover on it's 4" T.   This was made by Ripley & Co. ca. 1876. Ripley & Co. was located in Pittsburgh, PA.  Many glass companies from the Pittsburgh area made Centennial novelty pieces to honor 100 years since the signing of our Declaration of Independence in 1776.  At 141 years of age this Oval Shield shaped Covered Butter is a true Antique.  This is the early Shield pattern.  The finial shows the Stars & Stripes.   This shield pattern was later used to make the Miss Liberty Bread Plate in 1891 when Ripley became part of U.S. Glass as Factory F.   When glass gets to be this old it's hard to find them in excellent condition.   This one does have a couple issues.  There is a small flat flake on the top surface of the cover near the top center of the shield shape.  It's there but not noticeable.  You have to feel for it.  There are also some rough edges and tiny nips on the outside edges of both the base and the cover. Again nothing major or noticeable.  The bottom part of the Butter Dish has no chips on the top edge of the bowl which is remarkable for it's age.  There are no cracks or hairlines.  No mineral deposit or stains.  The clarity of the glass is excellent. Overall for it's age it's in very good condition.  Ware on the bottom is commensurate to it's age.  Any unusual white or dark spots in the photos are from camera glare.  These old Centennial Novelties from 1876 don't come along very often today.  This will make a great accessory to any Victorian home.   4493R1712
