DESCRIPTION:

The Audéo V50 is Phonak's newest mid-range receiver-in-canal (RIC) hearing aid, and is just a step above the entry level Audéo V30. This hearing aid is available in 4 different models: 10, 13, 312, and 312T. Those numbers refer to the battery size of the hearing aid. The size 10 model is the most discreet and will have the shortest battery life. The size 13 is the largest and will have the longest battery life. The size 312 model is the most popular and is a great compromise between a small size and great battery life. The 312T model is the one that comes with a telecoil. Aside from the telecoil in the 312T model, there is no difference in the technology or features offered between any of these models.

The brain of the Audeo V50 is Phonak's AutoSense operating system. AutoSense enables your hearing aids to automatically sense your environment in real-time and adapt automatically. The benefit of AutoSense is your hearing aids are constantly scanning the environment and self-adjusting, largely preventing the need for manual adjustments of the volume and programs

With the V50 model, AutoSense scans the environment, classifies sounds, and optimizes the hearing aids in 3 different listening environments.

-Calm Situations
-Speech in Noise
-Comfort in Noise

Although the automatic optimization of those 3 environments is certainly helpful, more advanced Phonak hearing aids can optimize up to 7 different environments. With this V50 model, you are missing out on automatic optimization in the following environments: Speech in Loud Noise, Speech in Car, Comfort in Echo, and Music. Although those 4 programs cannot be automatically accessed with the V50, you are able to manually access up to 3 of them via the on-board push-button. In practical terms, this means that as you go about your day-to-day activities, you're likely to be manually adjusting the hearing aids much more in order for them to sound right in every environment.

Of the 4 automatic programs that the V50 lacks, the most significant is the Speech in Loud Noise program, and here's why. The Speech in Loud Noise program utilizes a feature called "StereoZoom," which the industry calls "binaural beamforming." Binaural beamforming technology is state of the art when it comes to reducing background noise and enhancing the clarity of speech. In short, this technology creates a narrow microphone “beam” which allows the wearer to focus on whoever they are facing, resulting in better speech comprehension. Binaural beamforming, or StereoZoom, is only accessible in the Speech in Loud Noise program which is only available in the V70 and V90 models. This means that if you spend a considerable amount of time in noisy environments, this V50 model won't perform as well as the V70 or V90 models and you won't be getting state of the art speech enhancement. For this reason, many people, even with calmer lifestyles, will opt for the higher end V70 model.

There are a few other valuable features lacking in the V50 which are present in the higher-end models. SoundRelax instantly identifies loud impulse noises (doors slamming, alarms going off, dishes clanking) and reduces the amplification of those sounds so they are not too bothersome. Another feature missing in the V50, which is great for people spending time outdoors, is WindBlock. WindBlock is a powerful feature which automatically suppresses wind noise allowing you to enjoy the outdoors without the annoying sound of wind being over-amplified.

In short, the V50 gives you a decent amount of automatic and manual programs- enough for most people with a calm lifestyle. These programs will ensure that your hearing aids will perform as well as possible in most environments. However, if hearing in noise is particularly challenging for you, or you spend a good amount of time outdoors, these hearing aids are not likely to cut it. There are of course many other differences between the V50 and other technology from Phonak, but we feel these are the most significant. This hearing aid sits comfortably and virtually invisible behind the ear and is best for folks with calm lifestyles who struggle to hear mostly in quiet one-on-one conversations. If you're looking for a high-performing hearing aid with state of the art features, this is not the hearing aid for you. If you're looking for a reliable hearing aid that will get the job done and will most of the time sound "good enough" around the house, the V50 is a good choice.

I love my new Phonak audeo v50 hearing aids. My hearing has improved and I no longer need to ask people to repeat themselves. Fit is perfect and they are very easy to adjust the volume. I would recommend these aids to anyone struggling with a hearing loss regardless the degree of loss.

Hi, My new Phonak Audeo V50 hearing aids have helped me hear better. The TV volume is back to a normal level so that those sitting close aren't overwhelmed. [If I listen carefully might be able to hear marching ants on the pavement?] Both are in for some physical adjustments this week. After that a bit of fine tuning, but so far so good.
