GJPaw Auctions is pleased to offer a stunning cast bronze sculpture of Death as The Thinker, in a homage to Rodin. The Thinker is a bronze sculpture by Auguste Rodin. The work shows a nude male figure of life-size sitting on a rock with his chin resting on one hand as if deep in thought and is often used as an image to represent philosophy. The Thinker was initially a figure in a large commission, begun in 1880, for a doorway surround called The Gates of Hell. Rodin based this on The Divine Comedy of Dante. This 'homage' to Rodin takes the idea one stage further and shows the figure as a skeleton, perhaps more appropriate for the late 20th century, rather than the heroic figure in the tradition of Michelangelo, which was Rodin's conception. It is well known that the skull has been celebrated more throughout human history than any other symbol. Likewise, the skeleton has resounded throughout the history of art as a powerful symbol. Today, it can be seen in rock music, as well as making a progressive fashion statement, and the focal point of 3D interactive digital technology with Richard III's skeleton. While the skeleton undoubtedly represents the darker side of things, its appeal appears to go far beyond the melancholy and the macabre. This fine cast bronze bookend, with marble base measures 5 inches in width by 5 inches in depth by 9.5 inches in height (12.7 cm by 12.7 by 24.1 cm). The sculpture is signed Milo, with a stamp which reads: J.B Deposse / Bronze Garanti Paris. It is very good condition and probably dates to the late 20th century. It would make a fine accessory in any library.
