AND TRADITIONAL RULES
10% Donated to U.S. Campaign for Burma
For centuries, Burma has been the home of a unique form of chess. Its chessmen are legendary among chess collectors, and the special rules of play employed by the Burmese are one of the most fascinating variants to arise in the game's 1500 year history.
BURMA THEN AND NOW
Burma, also known as Myanmar, has long been embroiled in a stifling political predicament. For centuries, one of the great centers of civilization, and a major proponent of Buddhist teachings, the country is still living at the effect of military domination, limiting personal freedom and economic sustainability for a large portion if its citizens.
Sittuyin is one of the many unique cultural offerings of the Burmese civilization. Because trade with Burma has long been severely limited to most of the modern world, this chess set was created to maintain a respect and appreciation for Burma's rich cultural heritage.
RECREATION OF THE BURMESE STYLE IN AUTHENTIC DETAIL
This set is a specially commissioned creation spearheaded by AncientChess.com, pooling the talents of artisans on both sides of the Pacific to capture the essential style of the age-old Burmese chessmen. The original figures were carved by Cambodian master carver Pisith Pen; they were detailed and cast by Canadian chess craftsman Ivan Simberg, under supervision of AncientChess.com.
DURABLE AND HEAVY FELTED PIECES
These pieces are made of the strongest type of casting stone (brand name Drystone), made to simulate the ancient sets carved of stone or ivory.
The entire set weighs 1 pounds, 12 ounces.
The tallest piece, the elephant, stands 2 1/2 inches tall.
The bottoms of the pieces are covered with a durable felt, to improve the feel during play.
A Rule Booklet is included so that you may be play this game in the centuries-old Burmese style.
TRADITIONAL BURMESE STYLE BOARD
The board that comes with this set is made of rugged hard board (masonite) topped with a beautiful, glossy wood-grain graphic.
In the traditional Burmese style, it is not checkered and features a broad X in the middle, used in the game for pawn promotion (explained in the rules, of course).
