GJPaw Auctions is pleased to offer a fine and beautiful antique Terrestrial Globe, from Weber Costello Co., Chicago, Illinois, 1914In the 2nd century BC, roughly a century after the notion of a spherical Earth was accepted in Greece, Crates of Mallus created the earliest known globe. You can imagine the staggering transformations globes underwent as new continents and countries were discovered over the centuries.  Each time a new discovery was made or a change took place – for example, one country or empire was replaced by another - globes previously created became a window into the past, in essence, a spherical snapshot in time and therefore highly collectible. This terrestrial early 20th century globe is a rare and highly collectible medium-sized table globe, on a traditional cast iron cabriole leg stand. It is surmounted by a tin hour circle, canted on an inclination arm, which is raised on a faux-bronzed tripod iron stand with raised foliate decoration and cabochons between the cabriole legs, ending in paw feet. The oceans are blue, and geographic entities are cream-colored or faded green; ocean currents are indicated by white or blue lines. The gores were printed by the British firm of G.W. Bacon, which were most likely imported and manufactured into the globe by the American school supply firm Weber Costello for the seller, the school supply company J.L. Hammett. This globe shows current St. Petersburg as Petrograd, indicating a date from 1914-1924.  It also shows “Turkish Empire” consistent with a date before 1924 (the Ottoman Empire was succeeded by the Republic of Turkey in 1923). There are two text boxes: Top box text: 43-3. Length of a degree of Longitude along each Latitude circle. 12450. Circumference of each Latitude circle. Distance through earth (Diameter) of each Latitude circle. The above distances are shown in English Miles. Bottom box text: Isothermal lines for January [blue line]. Isothermal lines for July [red line]. International Date Line [thick red line]. Warm currents White/ Cold Currents Blue. COPYRIGHT G.W. BACON & CO. LTD. LONDON/ Printed in England. The globe measures 8.0 inches in diameter by 14.5 inches in height (20.3 cm by 36.8 cm). It shows wear consistent with a dating to the early 20th century, including rubbing, buffing, tiny scratches and oxidization. This is a fine collector’s piece and would make a worthy addition to any collection of Globes.
