EDMUND SPENSER. Minor Poems, Containing the Shepheardes Calender, Complaints ..., Chelsea: Ashendene Press, 1925.

Heavy, tall folio, one of 200 printed on paper (15 more were printed on vellum), pp. [ii], 216, thick boards covered in vellum quarter-bound in brown calf with 7 raised bands and gilt-stamped lettering to the spine. Printed by C.H. St. John Hornby.

A high spot for collectors of fine printing, using Hornby's Subiaco type. "It was not an easy type to work with, but the Ashendene Press succeeded," wrote Philippa Bernard et al. in "Antiquarian Books (p. 29)." Also, Hornby's "taste, craftsmanship and enthusiasm ... have caused Ashendene Press books to be among the most highly regarded of the entire private press movement." Also see Hornby 35 and Colin Franklin, pp. 240-41.

Printed in blue, black and red.

Condition of this book
Joints cracked and worn but the binding and cords are so strong that the book remains sound. I couldn't justify having any work done here. The boards are lightly soiled in spots, typical of vellum. Very clean and bright inside.
