What is Uric Acid?

Uric acid is a natural waste product from the digestion of foods that contain purines. Purines are found in high levels in some foods such as:

- certain meats
- sardines
- dried beans
- beer

Purines are also formed and broken down in your body. Normally your body filters out uric acid through your kidneys and in urine. If you consume too much purine in your diet, or if your body can’t get rid of this byproduct fast enough, uric acid can build up in your blood. A high uric acid level is known as hyperuricemia. This can lead to gout that causes painful joints that accumulate urate crystals. It can also make your blood and urine too acidic.

Benefits of Pomegranate

A cup of pomegranate has 144 calories, 3 grams of protein, 7 grams of fiber, 30% of the recommended daily allowance of vitamin C which is very important for gout sufferers, and 12% of the recommended daily allowance of potassium. Plus they are a good source of vitamins B, manganese, copper and phosphorus.

The most important health benefit of pomegranate though is it’s powerful antioxidant properties which help reduce uric acid in the blood. The reason is because it contains the most of every type of antioxidant out there.According to a 2008 study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry which evaluated the potency of 10 different beverages that were rich in polyphenols, pomegranate juice was ranked first as the healthiest of them all! Pomegranate beat its’ competitors by at least 20% like acai juice, blueberry juice and grape juice.

Benefits of Tart Cherry

Generations of people have reported that cherries keep joint pain and gout flares in check. Now, scientists are putting this popular folk remedy to the test, with promising results.

In a study of 633 participants, Boston University Medical Center researchers found that eating at least 10 cherries a day protected people with existing gout from recurrent attacks. The findings were published in 2012, in a supplement to the journal Arthritis & Rheumatism.

Benefits of Milk Thistle

Your body needs a healthy liver in order to metabolize the uric acid before your kidney can pass it out through your urine and if the liver ain’t functioning at 100%, uric acid build up may cause gout. So as a gout sufferer it is important to keep your liver healthy and that is what milk thistle can do for you.
