Letter to Merchant Moses Brown from Joseph Tyler
Referencing Captain Mayo & the Brig Columbia
January 3, 1799 - Stampless Letter Sent from
Boston, MA to Newburyport, MA

This stampless letter, sent from Joseph Tyler to Moses Brown (1742-1804), a privateer,  is dated January 3, 1799 and discusses a conversation between Tyler and Captain Mayo on the brig Columbia about the condition of his crew at sea.


It is believed that the Captain referenced may be Obed Mayo, an experienced navigator.


Brown, nicknamed “Gentleman Brown”, was among Newburyport’s top two rum merchants. Brown was a landowner, shipbuilder, and shipping merchant in Newburyport for decades. He traded in molasses, rum, and sugar, among other things, and became very wealthy, with a fleet of ships, a bank, an insurance company, and more.

Sir - I would inform you that I spock [sic] with Captain Mayo in the brig Columba Latt. 33, 36 Long. 79-14 bound to Charleston in the Latt. 39-40 North, Longitude 66-20 West. Laurst Mainmast and one man by name of Mathy wat for he told me that thar [sic] were all well aboard and that he would be glad if you right him what you would have to.

Letter measures approximately 12" x 8" inches and shows heavy discoloration / browning, staining. With some loss to page edges and folds (referenced in photos).
