1960 September 28, Boston Red Sox Program Ted Williams Last Game & HR Scarce

A beauty!  Program from Ted Williams Last at Bat, when he hit a HR into the wind and refused to tip his hat. HR #521 lifetime off Baltimore Orioles Jack Fisher. Condition: Ex -MT. unscored,  from Sept 28, 1960 Ted Williams last game. A beauty.

 John Updike wrote of it God does not answer fan mail.   Only program I saw for this in thirty years collecting. I had the ticket stub but sold it twenty years ago. It was my brothers ticket as he skipped school at Boston University to see  this historic game. Although millions claim to be at this game the attendance was 10,454 but really less than 6,000.  Williams stepped into the batters’ box in the bottom of the eighth inning against Baltimore pitcher Jack Fisher. He took his familiar stance, looked at the first pitch for a ball, swung and missed at the second, then drove the third pitch into the bullpen for the most famous farewell in baseball history. Williams had gone out the way so many players dream about and almost none accomplish: He homered in his final at-bat.

 

"I was gunning for the big one," Williams said in the clubhouse after the game. "I let everything I had go. I really wanted that one."

 

Following that final game in Boston, the Red Sox had three more games remaining in the season, all to be played in New York. In his autobiography, "My Turn at Bat," Williams says he told Boston manager Mike Higgins before that last game in Boston that he was done. "'Mike, this is the last game I'm going to play. I don't want to go to New York,'" Williams says in his biography." ... I knew the club was thinking about youth. ... There was a kid named Carl Yastrzemski coming up who was going to be a hell of a ballplayer."

 

After Williams hit his home run, manager Higgins sent him out to take his position in left field for the top of the ninth but then immediately took him out of the game so he could receive one last round of applause. Replacing him was Carroll Hardy, who hit .225 for his career.

 

Williams ended his day the way he started it, sitting in the dugout with his jacket on, as he watched Red Sox come back from a 4-3 deficit to win 5-4 in the bottom of the ninth for their last win of the season and Ted Williams’ last game as a player.

Brought fans to their feet and light up a room when he spoke. He knew the art of hitting like no other. Moody but a great autograph signer as I got him myself in the 1960's with Jim Thorpe. Programs are similer to yearbooks with less content. Most programs contain photographs, biography and history of the home team and the visiting stars photos. Diagrams of the stadium, seating plan, schedule, ticket prices, rosters, line-ups, how to keep score and vintage advertisment are common features. Many fans purchase a program at the game to keepscore, for reading material or to secure autographs. Programs from when a record was broken command premium value. Condition and scarcity also effect value. Regular game programs from the 1970's up run under $25, but vintage, scarce and rare programs run in the thousand of dollars.
