Description

The Sarcophagus of Anchnesraneferab,
Queen of Ahmes II, King of Egypt, about BC 564-526

By Ernest Alfred Wallis Budge
London: Whiting, 1885, First edition

Budge was a famous 19th century Egyptologist and this is his translation of the complete text inscribed on the outside and inside of the Sarcophagus of Anchnesraneferab, the last "God's Wife of Amun" before the Persian conquest of 525 BCE. Text in hieroglyphic characters, with transliteration and English translation. Includes glossary of hieroglyphs. Bound in cloth decorated with Egyptian figures in gilt. 10" x 8". 134 pages + 2 pages of publisher's advertising at rear. Frontispiece contains sketches of the sarcophagus (which one can still find in the British Museum). This is the original 1885 first edition.

"The black marble sarcophagus of this queen was found at Thebes. It forms one of the most remarkable monuments of the XXVI Dynasty. The text, reproduced in hieroglyphic type, contains the prayers of the queen to the gods, and their responses. It supplies variants of some of the chapters of the Ritual, or Book of the Dead, and many of the passages point to originals in the 'Pyramid Texts' published by M. Maspero. A literal translation and transliteration are given, with a general introduction and a running translation, also a list of the words contained in the text."

Light foxing, especially on plate and title page. Good condition, some wear on outer spine, hinge inside slightly cracked.
