Huntington by Robert Morden 1695

Copper engraved map on hand laid paper. Later hand colouring.

Published in William Camden's Britannia 1695 edition.

Robert Morden (active 1668 - 1703) was and engraver and publisher who set up his business in New Cheapside in London in the 1670's. He provided maps for the new translation of William Camden's 'Britannia' in 1695.  His work was not original - the maps were mainly based on Christopher Saxton's maps from the 1570's - but they were simple, attractive and easy to understand.  The maps were republished many times, both individually and in further editions of 'Britannia' through to the end on the 18th Century.  This map is probably from the 1695 first edition of 'Britannia'.
