Up for auction is this ornate embossed vintage advertising clip issued from National Bank Charter #48, retaken by Charter #2745, “The First National Bank of Pittsburgh”.  The 26 Story Bank Building is prominently centered on the face of this clip with amazing detail to the actual building, of 1909, with major renovations adding an additional 23 floors and completed in 1912.  Period scrollwork around the edges of the clip frame the Building nicely.  The clip appears to be non-magnetic brass.  The front of the clip is silver plated over brass, having a lovely toned patina.  There are high points of the building where I can see traces of base metal showing through.

The First National Bank of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania originally received Charter #48 from the Comptroller in Washington, DC in August of 1863.  The Bank liquidated when its 20 year Charter (license) expired on July 29, 1882.  The Bank Re-Chartered with the exact same name in 1882, receiving another 20 year license, only this time its new Charter was #2745.  On June 17, 1902 when the license was about to expire for a second time, the Bank re-applied and took back its original low Charter #48.  From that point, The First National Bank operated until April 19, 1913, when it merged with the Second National Bank of Pittsburgh.  At that point the name was changed!

This Bank Building was located at 511 Wood Street, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  The building was demolished in 1970.

The clip was manufactured by F.H. Noble & Company of Chicago. Their logo is stamped in the center of the backing plate. This advertising piece was probably given out to special customers of the bank to commemorate the opening of their newly renovated building.

My best guess puts this advertising clip’s manufacture sometime between 1912 when the Bank Building renovations were completed until April of 1913 when the Bank liquidated. After April 21, 1913, the Bank had a different name.  This advertising clip could have only been issued during a very small window of time.

This Advertising Clip would make a fine addition to any Pennsylvania State banknote collection.  The bank was located in Allegheny County, so it should appeal to those collecting National Banknotes and Banking Memorabilia from that County and its surrounding areas. Don’t let this Advertising Chip get away!
