DESCRIPTION:
Offered is this authentic, original early 1950's to early 1960's, vintage torched and hammered steel and headed nail Brutalist sculptural crucifix, with mounted cross, figure of Christ and an affixed cut steel sheet scroll of the original 'INRI' inscription placed over the head of Christ. The entire steel metal sculpture rests on a convex steel sheet circular base. The figure of Christ is realized with welded, torched headed nails, bent to form the appendages, arms, legs and neck of the human form. The lifeless body of Christ is believably portrayed with nails, depicting a slumped over, listless body of the deceased. What is truly remarkable is the emotive quality of the metal sculpture, considering it is entirely made of metal and the human form comprised solely of headed nails welded and soldered together to make a facsimile of the human form and of the body of Christ. The result is a realized human form that is fluid, immediately recognizable and delivers the fluidity and convincing believability one would only expect of naturalistic, figurative human sculpture. Outstanding.
