Family Estate ca. 1931-36
Earliest TAXCO (MEXICO) open CUFF BRACELET
Solid FINE 980 SILVER
appx 2.5” diam & 1.125" wide band

Weight is truly approximate: weighed on an old and unreliable postal scale that fluctuated between 54-61 grams, but we do not trust it, so remember we list this with the caveat for you to give or take, plus or minus, more or less.. Wait till you hold it in hand!  It is an incredibly heavy, solid piece of silver!

This extraordinary fine silver bracelet was hand wrought in Taxco, Mexico, circa 1930s to 1940s. PLEASE read below for more information about Taxco silver (coinciding with Great Aunt Bessie's travels makes this piece circa 1932-1936).

The bracelet is handcrafted in a sculptural design that is exquisitely detailed like a modern stylized twist with chased linework and 7 half-orbs or domes evenly spaced.  Each dome is surrounded by rope wire.  The artisan shows an Art Deco geometric influence but also appreciates the undulating curves of nature.

The difference between the interior and exterior attests to its hand crafting: Smooth to wear, the irregularities on the interior show the maker's bench work!!  The cuff appears to have been fashioned of two equal halves that were chased and then silver-solder-streamlined together in the center, with the rounded buttons applied after.

Stamped “TAXCO 980,” placing it in the time between 1931 and pre-WWII, this beauty is made of .980 silver, which means 98% out of 100%, almost pure silver.  980 is FINE SILVER and considered superior to sterling silver 925 in retaining its lustrous shine.  No maker mark, often typical of pre-war jewelry; the Mexican government instituted the eagle assay marks in 1948 after World War II.  Scroll down for more info.

There is light dimpling on some of the domes but no serious dents,  If you seek perfection, look elsewhere, because evidence of age, use, wear, storage, are the natural result of a favorite Great Aunt and a dear Mum enjoying life while wearing this beauty!

Time to move it forward -- for the next generation to treasure this wondrous bracelet.

For Your Information, FROM THE WEB:

"Artisan handmade jewelry of the Southwest and Mexico before what is generally called "The-Spratling-era" (circa 1931-1936) was rarely marked (unlike the specific mass-produced Fred-Harvey tourist silver of the post-1929 Route 66 era).  And any initials were usually not the artist's, but the initials of the owner for whom the piece was made.  What's more, initials were not stamped by the maker, but added by Trading Posts for identifying pawned articles. Spratling's Studio was indeed the first to develop Taxco artist marks circa 1932-36, unregulated until 1948 when the Eagle Assay mark was introduced....The Mexican and Native makers of jewelry believed any “flaws” on jewelry generally means the metal (and/or) stone removed negativity from the owner and makes life better for the wearer."
