Steel engraved maps.

George Washington Bacon (1830- 1922) was born in New York State but moved to London in 1861.  Bacon was a colourful character who set up a number of unsuccessful businesses including writing and selling medical booklets, selling portable gymnasium and sewing machines.  After being declared bankrupt in 1867 he stated a map publishing business based in the Strand in London.  In 1882 he published ‘The New Ordinance Atlas of the British Isles’.  The maps were printed from finely engraved steel plates and the maps were hand coloured.  The work was reprinted many times until 1912.
