Description

This is an amazing photo album of  approx 780 tennis photographs from 1952 to 1958 .  Most of the photos take place in Rhode Island tournaments but there are some in other states such as Massachusetts and Hartford,Connecticut.   I would say approx. 90% of the photos in the album are of Tennis tournaments, players in action shots, crowd shots, various identified and unidentified tennis players, portrait shots of certain players. About 10% of the album is of social events after the tournament, players with their kids, wife/girlfriend shots and a few others.    I could not possibly show all 780 photos so there are plenty more .

The album starts in 1952 and ends in 1958.  In  the beginning of the album the tournaments are identified and most of the people pictured are identified with hand writing below the pics.  But the last few years there is no writing to identify the tournaments or who the players are.   Since there are too many photos to picture i may have only taken one picture of a tournament but their might be 4 or 5 more pages of that tournament. I did look at teh back side of a few photos but there is nothing written on back.

Some of the players identified  are Nick Sharry who is in the Tennis Hall of Fame.   Also Henri Salaun who is probably known for doing more with United States Squash then any other person, he was inducted into the Hall of Fame Class in 2000 for squash.   Tony Vincent has many pictures who was one of the top 20 players in the world back in the 1950s.   Jules Cohen who was #2 in New England back in the 1950s.   Walter Hackett who is a listed Champion back in the 1950s.  Ed Van Beverhoudt who is a black player in his day, im not sure if he was a coach at the time of these photos, elected to New England Tennis Hall of Fame in 1997.   Again there are many , many more people with some identified and many other unidentified so there might be even more important players amongst the photos.  There are numerous women tennis players as well and some are identified and other are not.

The tournaments that are identified are : Oak Hill 1952, Rhode Island State Championships in 1953, 1953 City of Providence Championships, 1953 New England Championships in Hartford, Waumbek in 1953, Agawaum Hunt Club in 1953, Wentworth Invitational Tournament in 1953, 72nd Annual Lawn Tennis Tournament at Newport Casino in 1953, Oak Hill in 1953, RI State Championships in 1954, New England State Championships in Hartford in 1954, Waumbek in 1954, Oyster Harbor in 1954, Wentworth in 1954, Squirrel Island in 1954.  From 1955 on many or almost all the tournaments are not identified.   One that is identified is 1955 Longwood Cricket Club.

The maker of the photo album is not identified.  I dont believe it was a college tournament because there are no college signs or anything like that.  I believe these are all pro or professional tennis players in pro tournaments in New England.

It is an incredibly thorough photo album .  I would think it is something the Tennis Hall of Fame would love to have.  If you look at previous sales on ebay of antique tennis photos they are selling for around $5 to $70 each.  At $5 a photo this would be worth over $3500 so the album is well worth it.  These photos are much better then your typical $10 ones on ebay.

Winning bidder is to include $18   for shipping in the continental United States, please email for rates outside this area.
