I believe this to be bronze.Elephant is 5 inches long and 3 inches high. This is from the estate of an Air Force retiree going back to WWII. It was brought back from Japan Asia? Sometime in the 40s or 50s according to his children. 
The original glass part of the ashtray is gone but I am including the black glass insert you see in the 1st photos as it fits and looks OK.  Elephant is nice and heavy in very good shape
