 Brief History note:

The North Vietnam's Easter Offensive in the northwest of the Republic of Vietnam Military Region III, near the Cambodian border, started on April 4, 1972. The offensive focused on the fighting in Bình Long province and the siege of An Lc, the capital city of Bình Long province.

The Communist forces began their assault on April 13, 1972. A three-day all-out attack failed, after which the battle turned into a prolonged sixty-day siege of An Lộc with shifting communist attacks and ARVN counter-attacks.

During the battle, the  Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) 5th Division (approximately 7,500 soldiers, under the command of  General Lê văn Hưng and his deputy commander, senior colonel Lê Nguyên Vỹ) was outnumbered by a combined communist force consisting of three People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN) (also known as North Vietnam Army (NVA)) divisions (later on estimated at over 36,000 soldiers, under the command of General Trần văn Trà).

The North Vietnamese Communist forces kept An Lộc under constant artillery fire and had launched repeated massive all-out infantry and armor (T-54 medium tanks) assaults on An Lộc.

Although the Communist forces on several occasions breached the defenses, they never could knock-out the defenders; and An Lộc remained in the hands of the South Vietnamese.

From April 12, 2019 through early June 2019, the ARVN had sent relief forces to counter-attack the communist PAVN divisions.

On 18 June 1972, the ARVN III Corps commander declared the battle was over.

However,  the fighting had only subsided and An Lộc was not completely relieved until July 11, 1972.

The historic Battle of An Lộc (1972) lasted for 66 days and culminated in a tactical victory for the Republic of Vietnam. The struggle for An Lộc was an important battle of the Vietnam war, as South Vietnamese forces (ARVN) had blunted the massive North Vietnamese Communist  invasion and sucessfully halted the Communist forces’ advance towards Saigon.
