For your consideration an original 1951 Hoffman Specialty Co. Catalog.

They describe their Packless Supply Valves as having a “graphited Asbestos composition ring”. They also state "deep gland packed stuffing box" another location were asbestos most likely used. Catalog is not dated but it was part of a large collection of catalogs published in 1951.
