Great Northern Rly (Ireland) Set A 10 6x4 COLOUR Prints

Created in 1876 from a number of constituent companies, the Great Northern Railway (Ireland) connected Dublin and Belfast, and from the 1930s, its azure blue 4-4-0s became a legend. Split between CIE and UTA in 1958, the GN is no more, but its legacy lives on in this set of 10 6x4 ins Colour Prints.  We open with No 174, CARRANTUOHILL, an S class 4-4-0 of 1913, rebuilt with new heavier frames by G B Howden in 1939, and taken over by CIE in 1958 but sold to the UTA in 1963. No 174 is at Strabane, still wearing GN express passenger blue and GN lettering on the tender in September 1964. SG class 0-6-0 No 175 became UTA No 43, and though officially out of use, is seen making up an evening goods at Portadown on 1 September 1964 in this lovely evening shot. Big D, or officially SG3, No 35 is near Portadown Junction SB on 29 August 1964. Sister  engine No 33 blasts away from Portadown with the Omagh night goods on 1 September 1964. Class UG goods No 48, with side window cab arrives with a freight at Portadown on 29 August 1964. A clean engine, with the red and yellow UTA lining standing out clearly. Sister engine No 49 heads a rake of passenger stock across the Bann Viaduct on 29 August 1964. The impressive GNRI(I) CREST adorned locomotives and coaching stock, and we have included a detail shot of this attractive transfer. The GN was a pioneer operator of diesel railcars, and cars F and G of 1938 were articulated units with a central power house flanked by two passenger units. Railcar F became UT No 104, and a rare view shows this historic unit on the Bann viaduct on 1 September 1964. In 1948 the GN ordered the first multiple unit fleet to operate in the British Isles, the cars being delivered in 1950. GN No 611 went to the UTA in 1958, becoming No 115, and is wearing UTA GN- section blue and cream livery as it accelerates past the splitting home signal at Belfast Great Victoria St station in 1964. Finally, we take a look at the last flourish of GN steam, the McIntosh Class Vs 4-4-0 of 1948. No 207 BOYNE went to CIE in 1958 but was sold to the UTA in 1963. She is at Portadown on a Dublin express on 29 August 1964, still garbed in GN blue and with a full set of plates. A copy of these notes accompanies the set. Great Northern Ireland (BW1) 10 6x4 Black+White Prints

This evocative set of views of the legendary Great Northern Railway (Ireland) recalls some of the locomotives operated by this celebrated company which connected Dublin and Belfast.  We commence with a Glover Class V Compound No 84 FALCON at Belfast Great Victoria St in 1932, a stunning shot of this brand new locomotive in its original black livery, soon to be replaced by the celebrated Azure blue shade. No 107, seen at Londonderry GN shed in 1932 is a class PP 4-4-0, which was Charles Clifford’s first design for the Dublin-Belfast expresses and first appeared in 1896. No 119 started life as a Park class BT 4-4-0T for the Belfast suburban services, but was rebuilt as an 0-6-0T in 1920 and was used as the Derry shunter until 1935. A delightful and diminutive engine with a wrap over cab roof ! Class Q 4-4-0 No 121 is at rest inside Londonderry shed in another classic study. Another Clifford design, these fine engines were built between 1899 and 1904.  No 154 is a Class QG 0-6-0 good locomotive built to the designs of Charles Clifford in 1903-04, and is at Dublin Amiens St on 6 June 1948. The Clifford class S appeared just before World War 1 and ran until the 1960s. No 170 ERRIGAL carries the magnificent Azure Blue express passenger livery. No 201, MEATH of 1948, is a McIntosh development of a Glover 1915 4-4-0 with side window cab, and is seen departing from Bundoran with the Bundoran Express on 18 June 1948, the train including a nice mix of panelled wood and steel bodied stock. Railcar E, seen at Sutton & Baldoyle Station on 30 September 1949, was an articulated unit with a six coupled central power bogie, and was built for the Dublin suburban services in 1936. Cattle played an important part in GN receipts for many years, and as the drovers accompanied the livestock from the west of Ireland to the ports for shipment to England, the GN provided Drovers Brakes, one of which is seen at Greenore on 8 June 1948. Our final view is of No 206 LIFFEY, one of five magnificent Vs class McIntosh simple 4-4-0s built in 1948. They were the finale of GN steam, and what magnificent engines they were in lined out blue livery with Vermillion frames. No 206 is seen at Dublin (Amiens St) station a few years later.
