DESCRIPTION:
Offered is this lively, although diminutive, pastel on artist board by Rockport, Massachusetts longtime resident and artist Alfred Di Cesare, of a standing nude female, with Fauvist background treatment. The model appears to nervously look to her right, with her arms slightly lifted away from her torso and her legs gently splayed open, allowing her pelvis to shift and weight to rest on her right hip, giving her entire body a slightly relaxed, poised, tentative attitude and anticipatory feeling. The pastel colors are built up and applied in quick episodes of spirited, painterly application, with the background largely treated in the same colorist manner as the figure. The technique is at once painterly and masterfully executed, with a clearly Fauvist attitude and a virtual celebration of uninhibited, non-referential color, albeit in explosive pastels, rather than the more saturated, not watered down, acidic and caustic colors of the Fauvists. The figure's very expressive face has what appears to be a slight episode of soiling or a faint smudge. No attempt has been made to diminish or to 'in-paint' this area. A rather explosive work of art for being such a diminutive pastel drawing of a standing female model. Very sensitive and imbued with feeling. Wonderful.
