Gerald was officially credited with 18 ½ aerial victories, one probable, and 4 ½ damaged. His P-47 also cut many enemy locomotives and rail cars into not to mention other enemy vehicles. He earned the Distinguished Service Cross, Distinguished Service Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, the Legion of Merit with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Distinguished Flying Cross with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters, the Bronze Star, and the Air Medal with 4 OLCs. Adding a few more he received the Air Force and the Army Commendation Medals and the French Croix De Guerre with Silver Star.
