The spondylus for the Incas was
closely related to the divinities and presented itself as an offering in
fertility rituals. Being a mollusk of great thermal sensitivity and
characteristic of warm waters, it abounded on the banks when the current of the
Child bathed the northern coasts; On the contrary, when the flow of cold water
advanced more than that of warm water, this product was scarce. Therefore, the
presence of spondylus was indicative of an upcoming rainy season, which for
pre-Columbian cultures resulted in agricultural prosperity. His absence on the
beaches, on the other hand, was a sign that a dry season was approaching.
According to the data obtained from the presence of the mollusk, the priests
could plan the agricultural cycles so that the climatic conditions were
favorable.
