They are either defective or they have been secretly refurbished and repackaged as new. Batteries go bad or the firmware is so old that it does not connect/sync...or both. Sellers claiming to have "USA manufactured batteries" are full of it. Tiny batteries like the one in the fitbits are almost exclusively made in China. I've tried batteries from several suppliers over the years in an effort to find the best. The batteries I currently use are fresh and of high quality, however, I'm always on the hunt for better.
