For
those who love the beauty and elegance of Vintage-Era
Glassware Items - 1940s-1960’s. Many of the Glass-Makers of that era
manufactured a wide variety of pieces, patterns and colours – meeting the desire to bring colour and
style into the homes of consumers.
Offered here is a VINTAGE, Crystal-Clear-Glass Divided Vanity-Dish with a Farberware-Aluminum-Lid
having a Bakelite-Knob-Top - in near MINT - Most-Excellent barely-used condition.
This lovely dish would also serve well as a relish-dish or candy-dish.
DISH -
All Glass surfaces are
highly-glossy, shiny, crystal-clear, and clean. There are no chips, cracks,
stains; No significant scratches, rubs, nor hazing - just a little rub-wear on the
seating-base and a small flea-bite on the upper edge.
There is a deeply-molded
radiating starburst in the exterior of the base. The Dish is
divided into three equal sections - by thick, molded glass dividers. ALL glass
is extra thick & heavy gauge - the base is exceptionally thick at 1/2".
This Dish measures
6 3/8" in diameter across the top, 6 1/8" in diameter across the
base, 1 5/8" in height.
LID -
All surfaces are shiny
& clean with only faint signs of gentle use. The upper surface has
a hammered texture - typical of many VINTAGE - Wrought or Stamped Pieces. There
is detailing of an impressed PEONY or ENGLISH-ROSE motif on the top
center of the lid. The design is crisp and clear … only slightly visible
on the reverse of the Lid.
There is a handle
securely-affixed to the center of the Lid by a screw. This handle is flower
shaped, rising vertically (5/8" in height) from the lid - it is
yellow-gold in colour - likely Bakelite or some sort of vintage
plastic.
The underside of the lid is
stamped "WROUGHT; FARBERWARE; BKLYN, N.Y. within the outline of an
ANVIL ICON".
SOME INTERESTING INFORMATION –
COMBINED or THIRD-PARTY
-
This piece is a
COMBINED or THIRD-PARTY Vintage piece. Several
VINTAGE manufacturers made specifically-designed items to meet the needs of
other manufacturers - which they, themselves, did not market separately.
For this piece - Farberware likely combined efforts with a well-established glassmaker and plastics manufacturer of the same era to generate this final product.
Farberware -
Farberware was founded by S.W. Farber, a
tinsmith, in 1900 - in New York. Beginning with giftware he moved on to small appliances (invented the
electric frying pan 1954) and eventually cookware. KNOWN for being INNOVATIVE
and ALWAYS ahead of the curve - Farberware survived through the years, changing
to meet customer needs & demands - quality always a priority.
Plastics –
The birth of modern-day
synthetic plastics (not from plants or animals but fissil fuels) came in 1907 –
the Belgian-born American Leo Baekeland invented Bakelite.
Bakelite
used phenol in its manufacture – quickly following in the footstep of Bakelite
came polystyrene (1929), polyester
(1930), polyvinylchloride (PVC) and polythene (1933) and nylon (1935).
Soon
synthetic plastics were being manufactured in white and pale luminescent
colours – 1930’s
The industry BOOMED – mostly due to the war effort …. However, post-war – to keep production running – they looked to the mass consumer goods market …. TUPPERWARE launched in 1948; Hutzler Manufacturing, founded in 1938, pioneered plastic housewares manufacturing …. And other plastics were invented to broaden the scope of plastic’s usefulness to consumers.
After WW II, plastic was being
used much more regularly in the home and on manufactured household items –
replacing wood, metal, glass as it was versatile and usually more economical.
