Copper engraved map with original hand colouring.

William Lewis (active 1819 - 36) was a publisher and map maker working in London during the first half of the nineteenth century.  From his premises at 21 Finch Lane, Cornhill he produced a range of publications intended for the mass market.  The 'New Travellers Guide' was one such publication.  It provided a concise map with brief descriptions of each county or area of England and Wales.  These guide proved very popular at the time and were reprinted many times - the last edition appeared in 1836.  This map and description comes from the first edition of the guide printed in 1819. The maps were hand coloured, although often not very expertly!

Page size is 12cm by 15.5cm
Map area is in good condition for age, engravings are clear. Some browning , stains and finger marks. Original hand colouring.
