Can picture these on Great Aunt's desk. Handed down through the family: From back in the day when pens/nibs were dunked into inkwells. Signatures usually were blotted to prevent ink smears
This grand set appears to be papier mache layer on metal / wood, which was then gilded or otherwise painted or dipped in gold paint or other coloring. The Letter stand is metal, the blotter is wood: you can see tiny lines on the sides where the paper mache has worn a little.
You can see the old signatures in reverse on the blue felt, hard to discern, testament to its history!
The gilding or otherwise gold coloring has darkened through the ages. Likely it was shinier back in the day! Nice as is, has an old Florentine look -- or there are many wonderful spray paints if you wish.
From the estate box these were found in, we are reasonably sure these are Late 1890s, to early 20th Century: 1900s-1910s -- There were lots of other goods that suggest these were a purchase from a Grand Tour of Italy, as Victorians were wont to do -- and we know Gr8 Aunt Bessie did many European travels!
The felt has come off the edges, To appropriately glue back, use furniture repair's fish glue, what they used back in the day. Otherwise leave as found for display purposes. Expect light fleabites, gold wear, otherwise no major problems!
