LONDON CRIES of the renowned STREET VENDORS

True COCKNEY ENGLISH SLANG!

The set includes authentic Cigarette CARDS, a Book, and 2 Butter pat dishes that highlight the notoriety of the Street Vendors of London.  Any student of Cockney, or true Cockney heritage will love this little set!!

This set is comprised of several fascinating looks at the street vendors, or hawkers, or costermongers that were part of English market history since the 15th Century.  Their greatest numbers and visibility came during mid-Victorian England,  They became known for their melodic sales patter, poems, and chants, which they used to attract attention to their wares to make sales. Their loud sing-song cry or chanting became part of the fabric of street life in London and other large cities in Britain.  Sellers sold darn near everything on the streets, while Tin men wagoned up and dow the streets to collect old scrap metal.  Street vending was an occupation equally shared by men and women alike and even rag-a-muffin poor children sold matches and newspapers, shined shoes, or ran errands to make enough money to eat.
