New York City’s Saul Birns Company, purveyors of Pianos and Victrolas. Saul Birns, a.k.a. Saul Birnzweig was best known as a real estate developer. He was infamous, though, as the “phonograph swindler.” Advertising phonographs on credit in the foreign press, Birns collected over $100,000 a year (remember, that’s in 1915 dollars) by collecting initial $5 payments on substandard machines and shipping them C.O.D. He then keeps the cheap machine and the money too. Birns was arrested and convicted. After paying a small $750 fine, he still had plenty left over for expansion of his New York retail and real estate ventures.
