SOME INTERESTING
INFORMATION –
PYREX – Round Bottom
Casseroles -
A totally re-designed series
of ROUND Casseroles were released in the late 1940's to early 1950's.
The 1950's brought about a
re-design of casserole dishes. They became smoothly rounded - top to bottom - with rounded, full width handles.
Several sizes were available – two smaller similar casseroles were released in the 1960's
which had thick tab handles.
Casseroles came in Crystal-Clear, Tinted-Clear, Textured-Clear
Glass and well as Milk-Glass - Plain, Tinted, With Colour Top-Coat, or with
Graphics. Matching Lids came either Flat-Top or Knob-Top, Crystal-Clear,
Textured, or Tinted Clear Glass.
Round-Bottom (024 mainly as well as some colours
were available in other sizes) Milk-Glass Casseroles were released in the
following colours or patterns – Opal
(Plain White Milk-Glass); (Mid) Horizon Blue; Verde (Avocado Green); (Bright)
Green; Friendship (Bright Red); Yellow
(Light Butter-Yellow); (Warm-Yellow 1968) Pineapple; Lime Green;
Flamingo Pink … as well as some promotional 024 M-G Casseroles with graphics
which include Turquoise Wheat, Butterfly-Gold, Golden Branch 1959, Gold Tulip
1959, Holiday Pinecone, Spring Blossom, and several more …
This series of ROUND LIDDED CASSEROLES came in a
stepped series of sizes. Extra-Small (Lidded Individual Size) - 080, 8-oz;
980-C; Small - 022, 1-QT; 622-C, 682-C; Medium - 023,
1 1/2-QT; 623-C, 683-C; Large - 024, 2-QT; 624-C, 684-C; AND an Extra-Large
Lidded Roaster – 026, 3 l, 3 QT; 687-C Roaster-Lid, PYREX or CORNING LID.
MOST
023 casseroles came with either the 623 (flat-knob-top utility) OR 683
(flat-top utility) clear lid.
THE
BEAUTY of the FLAT-TOP UTILITY lid is that it was designed
with DUAL PURPOSE - to serve as an elegant, fitted lid AND to stand
alone to be used as a baking dish as well.
The thought
behind the FLAT-KNOB-TOP Utility lid is to have it balance on
the flat knob-top when inverted.
PYREX – Opal (White) (Milkglass) Pattern -
Authentic, NEVER-DECORATED, PURE-Opal-White Oven-Table-Ware was produced
from the 1940’s-80’s - different pieces came and went over that time.
CAUTION
- there is A LOT of
opal-white PYREX available because of decoration having worn off opal-based
PYREX.
The exterior surface - opal-white finish - has a shiny, satiny, silky
sheen; interior surfaces are highly-glossy.
