here is a - Vintage-Retro Anchor-Hocking, Fire-King -
Opal-White Milk Glass D-Handle Hot-Beverage MUG – with Red-Colour Floral-Motif
Graphics – likely produced in the 1960’s-1970’s
- in excellent, gently-used condition.
All
glass surfaces are highly-glossy &
shiny and clean; NO chips, cracks, nor flea bites; no stains - only minor glass-mild
overflow seam-roughness and some faint scratches with
a bit of residue in them.
The fired-on,
Red-Colour Floral-Motif graphics-design is fabulous and eye-catching. One
side of graphics is slightly-glossy, the other is more to matte – the colour is
a little faded BUT the graphics design is still crisp, clear and near complete
– some thinning, fleck colour loss, fine rubs & scratches.
This Mug
is embossed on the base -
"ANCHOR HOCKING; MADE IN U.S.A; "H over Anchor"
LOGO; 70; Fire-King; OVENPROOF" - indicative
of the 1960’s-70’s.
This
Mug measures - 3" in diameter, across the top edge; 4" across the
top edge and handle; 3 1/2" in height; 2 1/2" across the base seat
rim.

Anchor-Hocking -
Anchor-Hocking was one of the leading makers of HIGH Quality, vintage era (and
older) glassware which began in a facility that produced glass since
1863; formed by the merger of two companies ("Hocking Glass" est
1905; "Anchor Cap & Closures") in 1937.
Embossed Information -
Anchor-Hocking Fire-King products have varied
in information, script, and case, embossed on their bases, from
the 1940s until now. Molds were used until the embossed information
needed to be updated or until the information was no longer legible.
The stylized "H-over-Anchor" logo - introduced in 1937 -
was phased-out for the "boxed anchor" by 1977 - the new logo began to
appear in 1968 - BUT - it took a while for all molds to be replaced
with the new embossing.
Not all pieces were embossed with a LOGO.
Anchor-Hocking Fire-King – Mugs –
Available to Retailers - The most common Fire-King Mug-Styles include – Soda,
Footed, Concord, Kimberly, Stackable, D-Handle, Ranger, and C-Handle.
There
were several more unusual shapes and styles made by A-H F-K.
There
were several different styles of handles that Anchor-Hocking applied to their
MUGS: D-Handle
(a few versions –D-Handle (top-heavy; stepped at top), Stackable (bottom-heavy;
C-Handle (a few versions – Kimberly
(full), Ranger (elongated), C-Handle (tabs top & bottom), Concord
(stepped), Footed (angular). B-Handle
(Soda).
There were also several MUGs Styles available to Industry – referred to as Restaurant-ware – C-Handle Flat-MUGs – Slim Chocolate (7-oz), Small-Restaurant (7-oz),
Extra-Heavy (7.5-oz) and a Standard (9-oz) D (squared) -Handle Fat-Bottom MUG.
Glass-Mold
Overflow – when molded glass
ware was manufactured, often there would be seepage of glass between the mold
plates or forms. This glass-mold overflow was carefully
ground, sanded, polished down to flush – before items were mass produced. To
keep costs down for mass produced items, manufacturers did not address the
glass-mold overflow before sending to retailers – as this excess glass would
smooth, wear, or chip-away over time, with use – without impacting the
integrity of the glass form proper. So, those pieces which are barely-used -
tend to have some flea-bites & roughness on these types of edges.
