John Cary (1754- 1835) is widely considered to be England's finest cartographer of the late 18th to early 19th century. Making use of the much more accurate geographical information increasingly available during this period, and his fine ability as an engraver, Cary produced the most accurate and clear maps of the period. His county maps improved greatly on previous maps and the accuracy and detail compare well to modern maps. Many of the maps formed the basis for the first 'Ordinance Survey' maps of the early nineteenth century. This large map was produced in 1789 for a new edition of Camden's Britannia.
