This map shows Wallis's Islands and is less embellished or informational than the other maps I have listed.  It has a mileage chart and a small amount of  bathymetric soundings.  It is from one of the volumes of the first edition of "A Voyage toward the South Pole" by Captain James Cook.  It measures 9" by 12" and is in great condition but for age yellowing.  This was "discovered" off Tahiti.  Reading up on it further, it's volcanic in origin, has crater lakes and is utterly beautiful.  I would love to visit but my French isn't up to par these days.  It was owned by Tonga until the French took over.  It has a population of 8,000 and is agricultural.  Enjoy this wonderful bit of history.

THE INTERESTING HISTORY OF THIS PIECE:
THE OWNER OF THIS PIECE RELAYED THAT IT WAS OWNED ORIGINALLY BY HER GGGRANDFATHER WHO WAS A WEALTHY BUSINESSMAN IN COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA.  MOST OF THE PEOPLE IN COLUMBIA THOUGHT THAT SHERMAN WOULD DEAL WITH THEM FAIRLY AND THAT THE TOWN WOULD JUST BE TURNED OVER TO THE NORTHERN TROOPS.  HE DIDN'T WANT TO TAKE THAT CHANCE, SO SENT HIS WHOLE FAMILY AND THEIR MOST IMPORTANT ITEMS TO THE FARM OF A GREAT AUNT IN PELION, S.C.   HE WAS A GREAT BIBLIOPHILE, SO HIS BOOKS AND MAPS WERE ON THE WAGON.  THEY LOST EVERYTHING ELSE THEY OWNED, INCLUDING A FINE ART COLLECTION, WITH THE BURNING OF COLUMBIA.
