Real Madrid celebrated their centenary year with a flourish, winning their ninth European Cup and third Intercontinental Cup in their illustrious history. The fans in the Yokohama stadium bore witness to a thrilling game which saw los Blancos take on Olimpia de Asunción.

It was Ronaldo who opened the scoring in the 14th minute after Raúl had cleverly dummied Roberto Carlos's left-wing centre. The Paraguayan side refused to let their heads drop after the goal, making the most of Madrid's defensive uncertainty to lay siege on Iker Casillas' goal. It was not to be Olimpia's day however, as with just five minutes to go Guti broke free of the defence to head home Figo's right-wing cross.

Ronaldo, Roberto Carlos and Luis Figo all played key roles in Real Madrid's victory as did keeper Iker Casillas, so often the match winner. The South American side's keeper Tavarelli also did his side proud after denying the Spaniards on several occasions.

Just months earlier, in the same stadium, Ronaldo had scored twice against Germany to seal Brazil's fifth world crown in the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan TM. His stellar performance in this game went some way to demonstrating that Madrid were right to sign him. The striker's physical strength, power and pace make him a true penalty-box predator, able to beat goalkeepers with astonishing ease.

Ronaldo, voted the final's most valuable player, dedicated the win to his son and declared: "After having been out injured for two years I'm delighted. This was my lucky stadium in the World Cup and it has been good for me again. This has been an incredible year for me."

Coach
The quiet and discreet man who led Madrid in that final was Vicente del Bosque. A home-grown coach, he was first appointed on a temporary basis after John Toshack was dismissed, and stayed for nearly four years, winning 2 Liga titles, 1 Spanish Supercup, 1 European Supercup, 2 European Cups and 1 Intercontinental Cup.

A disciplined and hard-working coach, one of his main strengths during his reign as Real Madrid coach was his ability to mould a collection of some of the world's biggest stars into an effective unit.
